Tonight

I rode up to the track tonight and on my way home, crossing the Mississippi on the Franklin Avenue bridge, caught this sunset, shown here in all its glory, in case you missed it:

My question to you: is there any city along the Mississippi more beautiful than ours, and if so, where?

Great summary of your LA to MN trip. I am starting to think about a similar trip, spring of 2010, starting in the Big Easy in Late March or early April and heading north with the turn of spring.

I am looking for riding mates and am quite flexible in the timing. Anyone interested should email me at hanse034@umn.edu. I'm 55 and resently semi-retired so I finally have the time to do my first big ride. I've been doing lots of 1,2 and 3 day trips for a few years and usually get in 2-3000 mi a season.

Having lived at several points along the Mississippi (St Paul, New Orleans and Itasca Park) at various times I thought this would be a great ride.

I live in New Orleans in 1979 and rode my Varsity to work every day, going from the West Bank to Downtown via a ferry. Your comment about the drivers and the person who yelled at you to "ride on the f'ing" side walk really hit home. I had a city bus driver do the same thing. He opened his door with the bus going 20 mph and a full of riders and went into a stream of insults that a drill sgt. would find appropriate. The sidewalk he wanted me to ride on was similar to the one in your picture and ended in about 1 block with no way to get back to the road over a ditch full of swamp water, swamp critters and misc discarded shopping carts and other junk.
